Up Above Moscow is a cycle of music nights in a most advantageous location offering unique views of Moscow. In warm seasons, the performances are staged on the rooftop of the Worker and Kolkhoz Woman pavilion, at the footing of the iconic 24-meter sculpture. At all other times, the concerts are held on the fourth floor with admission to the rooftop during the break. The organizer of the project is the Manege Unit.
Marina Volkova Jazz Band in a Tribute to Sarah Vaughan
20.00 – arrival of guests, 20.30 – performance
Ahead of the birthday anniversary of the great singer Sarah Vaughan, Marina Volkova Jazz Band will perform her best jazz standards.
Marina Volkova is a jazz singer and composer. Her singing sparkles with exquisite intonations and an amazing sense of swing. After completing her academic studies under Marina Gromova, one of the best professors in Russia, Volkova came to be part of the Moscow jazz community and fell in love with jazz forever. She took to listening to the recordings of Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and other great jazz vocalists and started to participate in numerous jazz festivals. In 2009, she took part in Anna Buturlina’s First Moscow Contest of Jazz Singers. Today, she appears at the best jazz venues in Moscow and teaches vocals at the Moscow Luna Theatre led by Sergey Prokhanov.
The Marina Volkova Jazz Band has had lineups featuring Sergey Vasiliev, Pavel Timofeyev, Vladimir Luiso, David Tkebuchava, who are among the best of Moscow’s young jazz talent.
“I kept asking jazz musicians, “What is swing? They just shrugged their shoulders. That is a question with no answer – swing is something one can only feel. I could have asked them what love is just as well,” the singer says. A great influence on Marina has proved to be the unrivalled singer Sarah Vaughan: “I kept listening to her “Swinging Easy” album”.
Tickets are available at the box offices of the Worker and Kolkhoz Woman Center and online at voxxter.ru and the website of the Manege Unit.
The ticket price is 300 rubles including admission to the exhibition on the first floor on the day of the performance.
